Working with Segments

What is an Audience or Segment? 

Aptinsic provides you with the ability to define audiences in your engagements or to create audiences as a reusable segment.  Each of these allows you to classify a group of users in your system based on some known information.    Segments can then be purposed to create audiences that can be used in reporting, dashboards and engagements.   Aptrinsic provides you with the ability to create Segments using customer inferred data, custom fields, product data and product behaviors. 

IMPORTANT: A segment is a classification of users that you plan on targeting.  Users will become members of the segment only when they match the criteria once they log into your application and identify themselves and/or exhibit the behavior defined in your segment.  In other words, just because you created a segment does not mean that users automatically belong to the segment. 

The below instructions are on how to create a new segment but the same process can be used when defining your audiences in your engagements.

Creating a New Segment

Start by clicking on the Segments 

on the left navigation, where you will be presented with the following screen:


Click on the "Create" button located in the upper right hand of the screen.  You will be in the segment creation screen:

  1. Start by giving your segment a name in the upper left part of the screen.  
  2. Next, select the product you are creating this segment for and optionally click on  icon to add a description.  
  3. Finally, select the filter criteria from the Rules menu.  
  4. When you have finished adding all your Rules, click on the "Create" button in the upper right hand corner.  

Working with Rules

Rules allow you to filter users from your system and when grouped together allow you to create useful segmentations.   Segments can be used to identify various cohorts, such as Admins, Practitioners and Executives.  

In addition, they can be used to identify industries and verticals such as, SMB, Mid-Market, Enterprise, Telecom, Tech, etc.  Lastly, you can segment users based on feature usage and other environmental product information.    

When adding Rules to your Segment, you can decide if the Rule Set is "Matches All / AND" (meaning all have to be true to fire) or they are "Matches Any / OR" (meaning any of them need to be true to fire).   

In addition, you can have multiple filter criteria within a Rule.  The Criteria Sets also have ALL and ANY settings within each rule, allowing you maximum flexibility when building a segment.   For example, below is a rule with four Criteria Sets for the "Last Seen" attribute of the User Attributes rule:

Editing an Existing Segment

To edit an existing segment, click on the Segments 

 icon on the left navigation, then select the segment you wish to edit and click on the name.  

Deleting a Segment

To delete a segment, click on the Segments 

 icon on the left navigation, then select the segment you wish to edit and click on the name.  Next, click on the 

icon in the upper right hand corner and then confirm the deletion.
